The main dietary pattern
UF/IFAS describes green iguanas as largely herbivorous. Tender shoots, flowers, fruits and other vegetation form much of the diet.
Exceptions exist
Juveniles have been observed eating insects, and other animal material has been documented. Those observations do not overturn the broad plant-eating pattern.
Species matter
Marine iguanas are a striking contrast because they are specialized to feed on marine algae. A good answer to “what do iguanas eat?” therefore begins by identifying which iguana.
